America Is at a Crossroads

Today, the world is battling the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. Here in America, we are mourning the deaths from the pandemic of over 100,000 precious people. Forty million workers have lost their jobs due to the pandemic. With over 100,000 deaths and 40 million jobless, some are still resisting social distancing guidelines. Some are politicizing it. It is not about politics. It is about people. God help us.

At the same time, there are race riots fueled by pent-up rage from generations of racism and oppression in America. Hatred and racism are not right. Hatred and racism are anti-Christ. God help us.

All this sickness, joblessness, and unrest is impacting mental and physical health. Stress, anxiety, and worry are having their way, wreaking havoc on one’s mind and body. Left unchecked stress and anxiety lead to heart disease, which will cause even more death. God help us.

Thirty years ago, I was preaching and warning people that if America, the most powerful nation in the world, was ever destroyed it will be from within. With a rapid decline in hunger for God and hunger for the Bible over the last three decades, we are now living in those dangerous days. America is at a crossroads. Divided from God and divided with people, we will fall. United to God and united with people, we will stand. Loving God and loving ALL people is the life Christ has called us to live. The choice is ours. God help us.

What Kingdom Love Looks Like

In Jesus' day, a scribe was a lawyer who specialized in the Mosaic Law. One day one of these scribes came to Jesus with a question: "'Which commandment is the most important of all?' Jesus answered, 'The most important is, "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength." The second is this: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." There is no other commandment greater than these.' And the scribe said to him, 'You are right, Teacher. You have truly said that he is one, and there is no other besides him. And to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.' And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, 'You are not far from the kingdom of God.' And after that no one dared to ask him any more questions" (Mark 12:28-34).

Out of all the imperatives given to us in the Bible, including the Ten Commandments found in Exodus 20, Jesus wraps it all up into one commandment referred to as The Great Commandment—to love God with everything we have. That's it! That's the bottom line. Loving God is what it is all about. Loving God is what separates Christ-followers from mere church attendees. Loving God is what separates Christ-followers from the religionists of our day who are bound by denomination and church rules, regulations, and traditions.

Love Wins!

We live in a day when hate fueled by hate-filled speech is threatening to destroy peace and civility. Hate-driven violence is abusing and taking precious lives of people who are made in the image and likeness of God himself.

Fear that is bread by hate and its evilness threatens to paralyze and hold people's thoughts and actions hostage in a day when all thoughts and actions need to be attentive to the needs of others—those who are vulnerable and trapped in the vicious cycle of poverty and all the ills that it produces, regardless of age, race, gender, and religion.

10 Benefits of Loving God

Please allow me to share with you ten benefits of loving God:

1. God redeems us from a life of sin.
2. God forgives all our sins.
3. God removes our sins from us as far as the east is from the west.
4. God does not give us the punishment we deserve for our sins.
5. God heals us.
6. God renews our youth by satisfying us with good.
7. God works righteousness and justice for us.
8. God remembers that we are human.
9. God shows us compassion.
10. God loves us endlessly.

Given these ten benefits, why would anyone not want to love God? The benefits are out of this world!

Kingdom Love

Kingdom love is not a feeling, not an emotion, not just words, but action. This is how people will know that we are Christ's followers—not by our church attendance, our words, and our beliefs—but by our actions. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus says, "Watch me; watch what I do, and you will learn what Kingdom love is all about."

Jesus said:

As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you (John 15:9-14).

Taking Care of Widows

"Soon afterward he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, 'Do not weep.' Then he came up and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, 'Young man, I say to you, arise.' And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, saying, 'A great prophet has arisen among us!' and 'God has visited his people!' And this report about him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country" (Luke 7:11-17).

In Jesus' day, there were neither life insurance benefits nor government provision for widows. Widows were to be taken care of and provided for by the children of the family, and Scripture specifically tells us here that this dead man was the only son of this widow. I imagine there were many who attended the funeral and were in this procession that said things like, "I feel so sorry for her." There is a big difference between feeling sorry for people and being able and willing to do something about their condition.

Moved with Compassion

Dictionary.com defines compassion as "a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering."

As Jesus walked this earth, He revealed great compassion for both the individuals and the crowds of people around Him. At the very core of that compassion was His love for all people. Every person—those He taught, touched, healed, fed, delivered and set free—experienced the love of the kingdom.

How Can I Love My Enemies?

It's easy for me to love my wife. Becky is a great mother to our children, a hard worker, full of wisdom, abundant in faith, and loving toward me regardless of all of my faults. She has been with me through thick and thin, standing by my side, encouraging me along the way. I would die for Becky. I have no problem with that and wouldn't even have to think about it, but my enemies who have lied about me, ridiculed, and persecuted me — how could I die for them?

Three Words That Melt the Heart

My wife, Becky, and I have been married for over thirty-nine years, and my heart still melts at three words she says to me: “I love you.” She does more than tell me that she loves me; she shows me her love for me through her actions — she is a woman of faith, full of wisdom, a hard worker, a wonderful mother to our children, a marvelous cook, and a meticulous housekeeper. I’m a blessed man.

I have three words for you today — you are loved. Jesus loves you so much that He died for you on an old, rugged cross. He desires to be your strength today and always.

The Secret to Understanding the Kingdom

How to Walk in Power, Love, and Self-discipline

As we approach the coming of our Lord, we are surrounded by ever-increasing evil. Many are
overwhelmed by fear. What is the Christ-follower to do? We are to overcome evil with love. Jesus has not left his followers powerless until he returns. He has given us his Spirit, which empowers us to live as loving overcomers.

How Prayer Will Increase Your Faith, Love, and Praise

One of the benefits of being a praying person is being able to look back over your life and see the answers to prayer that God has brought. If you pray, you know what I’m talking about. Reflecting on God’s goodness in answering prayer increases not only our faith, but also our love for the LORD. Out of our increased faith and love comes praise from the heart that articulates through our lips.

If you are a person of prayer, take a moment now and reflect on the answers to prayer that the LORD has brought to you. If you are not a person of prayer, there is no better time than now to begin making prayer a part of your life. Get a spiral notebook to use as a prayer journal. Make a list in the notebook of all the prayer requests that you are going to pray about and trust the LORD to answer. In the left-hand margin, put the date of when you first write the prayer request in your journal. Take time every day to enter your place of prayer with your prayer journal in hand. Pray over each request daily until you feel the Holy Spirit directing you on to the next request. In God’s timing and in God’s ways, you will begin to receive answers to your prayers. As you do, take a highlighter and highlight each prayer request that the LORD has answered. Write the date in the right-hand margin of when the LORD answered the prayer.

The Cross and the Empty Tomb

Not just during the Easter season, but each day, we are confronted with the cross of Christ and the empty tomb. What do they mean? Why are they so significant?

In the 1800's Ralph E. Hudson wrote the chorus to the sacred hymn, At the Cross: "At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, and the burden of my heart rolled away. It was there by faith I received my sight, and now I am happy all the day!"

• At the cross, we realize how much God loves us (Romans 5:8).  
• At the cross, we are justified and saved from God’s wrath (Romans 5:9).  
• At the cross, we are reconciled to God (Romans 5:10). 
• At the cross, we experience forgiveness of sins (Luke 23:34). 

The Greatest Characteristic of a Christ-follower

The Christ-follower walks in faith, hope, and love.

Christ-followers have faith in the One they follow. They trust Jesus with their present and their future. They even trust Jesus with their finances, realizing that they are blessed so that they can bless others.

The hope of the Christ-follower is different from the hope of those who don’t follow Christ. The hope of a Christ-follower is surrounded in expectation, while the hope of others is surrounded in wishful thinking. Christ’s followers fully expect the LORD to keep His promises because they serve Him with total abandonment.

The love of Christ’s followers is a supernatural gift that is given to them by the Holy Spirit. With this supernatural gift, they are able to love not only the lovable but also the unlovable. They love as Christ has loved them.

Victory!

There is one constant theme throughout the entire Bible—VICTORY! Because of His love and grace, God grants victory for His children. Life here on earth can be a battle as we try to live for the LORD, but we are afforded victory, and our victory is in Him.

Beloved, your victory today is found in Jesus. Follow Him with your whole being and victory is yours.

Scripture:
“No weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall confute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD and their vindication from me, declares the LORD” (Isaiah 54:17).

Prayer:
Father, I thank you for the victory you have given us through Jesus Christ. I pray for those today who are facing persecution in the home, workplace, schoolhouse, or wherever they are doing what is right and good as they follow Christ. I pray for those living in lands where their life is in danger because of their faith in Jesus. Encourage each one today, Father. Strengthen us all by your Holy Spirit, giving each of us reaffirmation of the victory that has already been afforded us at the cross of Christ, including our ultimate victory which is to come. I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Besides Jesus Christ, my dad made more of an impact on my life than any other man I have ever known. I could never list all the ways that dad influenced my life, but please allow me to share some with you here.

Dad influenced me to:

• love the Lord and faithfully serve him with my time, talent, and finances.
• make the Bible the authoritative guide for all of my beliefs and actions.
• love my wife as Christ loves the church.
• always be available for my children, caring for and loving them.
• point people to Jesus on this journey from earth to glory.
• love God’s creation.

I owe a lot to my dad’s influence, and I thank God for giving me the honor to be his son.

How to Focus on What You Know

Life is full of the unknown. What we know tends to bring comfort; what we don’t know can bring
much anxiety if we allow it to mess with our thinking. I’m convinced that we will be better off emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually if we focus on what we know instead of concentrating on the unknowns of life.

If you make the unknowns of life your focus, it will get the best of you, bringing you down into the gloomy loneliness found in the dark prison of despair, paralyzing your life, and destroying your future. What would happen if you focused on what you know instead of the uncertainty that robs you of your sleep, joy, and peace, threatening to rattle your sanity beyond what is repairable?

My Dad's Toolbox

The day in which we live is full of uncertainty and change. We don’t know when our Lord will return, but we watch with anticipation as we move along on our journey of following Him from earth to glory. With each passing day, we realize how fragile life can be; we realize that we need help on our journey. Each of us needs encouragement and people in our lives who will encourage us.

As I was growing up, I always helped my dad when he worked on things around the house or on the cars. I would get his toolbox and be quick to hand him each tool that he asked for. To this day, when I see dad’s toolbox, I remember all the great times I had as I spent time with him working on things. They are memories that uplift and stir me to this day.

As a pastor and an author, I look at myself as one who helps others by handing them the tools they need for their journey as they follow Christ. The Be Encouraged series is a set of encouraging tools that will be of great value in the Christ-follower’s toolbox.
